Meet Helen Niola

I’m currently pursuing a graduate degree in Mental Health Counseling, driven by my passion for helping others face their challenges. My studies have deepened my understanding of how human behavior impacts mental health and how mental health affects daily life. I am particularly interested in the role of a counselor in guiding individuals through their struggles and using therapeutic techniques to support positive change.

During my undergraduate years, I developed an interest in supporting minority communities, particularly those facing issues related to race, ethnicity, sexuality, and disabilities. I also studied Women’s Studies, where I explored the Black Power Movement and the influential roles of Black women like Afeni Shakur and Angela Davis. My research in immigrant labor rights and my involvement with advocacy groups like the Street Vendor Project solidified my commitment to supporting marginalized communities.

As a future mental health counselor, I am eager to incorporate a variety of therapeutic approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), to help clients address issues like depression, anxiety, and trauma. I believe that a counselor’s role is to build a strong therapeutic alliance with clients, creating a safe and trusting space where they feel heard and understood. I aim to use techniques such as mindfulness, reflective listening, and cognitive restructuring to help clients navigate their challenges, manage emotions, and make lasting positive changes.

I am also committed to using a culturally sensitive and holistic approach in my practice, recognizing the importance of each client’s unique background and personal experiences. By integrating these therapeutic techniques and approaches, my goal is to empower clients, enhance their well-being, and support them in living healthier, more fulfilling lives
